Georgia Codes for Pool Fence Safety

Georgia Codes for Pool Fence Safety | East Georgia Fence

The Official Compilation of Rules and Regulations of the State of Georgia (Ga. Comp. R. & Regs.), Section 511-3-5, covers the minimum standards for public swimming pools. While local jurisdictions determine codes for residential pools, they tend to follow or exceed state standards.

Georgia residents who want to prevent unsupervised access to a pool on their property, particularly by small children at high risk of drowning, will find many options to explore at East Georgia Fence. In this blog, find out how you can select a pool fence that meets all applicable codes for your area.

What Is the Minimum Pool Fence Height in Georgia?

State law requires that pool barriers stand a minimum of 48 inches high, measured from the ground to the top of the fence on the side facing away from the pool.

Although you may certainly choose a taller fence, and many reach 60 inches or higher for added safety and privacy, you should check local codes for a maximum permitted height. You may need a zoning permit for fencing exceeding a certain height, depending on your jurisdiction.

What Types of Gates and Latches Are Acceptable?

There are several specifications regarding the entry to your pool area. First and foremost, any gate you install as part of your barrier must be a self-closing model, meaning it automatically swings shut to ensure it’s not accidentally left open.

In addition, the gate must open outward, away from the pool, to prevent the possibility of someone leaning on it from the outside and falling into the pool if it opens. Finally, the gate must feature a self-latching mechanism that automatically latches when the gate swings closed.

The latch must be located at least 54 inches above the ground to make it unreachable for small children. You may install a latch lower than 54 inches high only if it is on the pool side (inside) of the gate, at least three inches below the top. For safety, self-locking latches are preferred, and you may want to add an alarm to alert you of breaches.

Are There Rules Regarding Clearance and Spacing?

A fence is useless if it can’t keep small kids from crawling under it, climbing over, or squeezing through gaps, so there are also clearance and spacing requirements to follow.

The gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence may not exceed four inches, unless the ground is loose/shifting, in which case the maximum gap is reduced to two inches.

As for spaces in fencing, such as between slats, they may not be more than four inches wide. A solid barrier is typically considered preferable, but it may not have protrusions that facilitate climbing. If you opt for an economical chain link fence, as opposed to vinyl or wood, the mesh size may not exceed 1.75 inches.

What Happens if a Pool Fence Doesn’t Comply With Codes?

If your pool fence doesn’t comply with safety codes for the state and your region, it will fail inspection, and you may face fines.

More importantly, you increase liability on your property, along with the potential for accidental drowning incidents if children, pets, or others enter the pool area. If you discover your pool fence isn’t compliant, you should modify it or select suitable replacement fencing to ensure safety and avoid penalties.
